Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other sires listed in the database. EPD is expressed in pounds, either plus or minus. Interim EPD may appear in cases wherein there is insufficient information to allow the calculation of an EPD through National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an "I" and is calculated from pedigree information by the AHIR Department of the American Angus Association.

Accuracy (AC) is the reliability that can be placed on the EPD. An accuracy of close to 1.0 indicates higher reliability. Accuracy is determined by the number of progeny and ancestral records included in the analysis.

RANKING SALE BULLS
Information & Chart from Louisiana State University
To Determine Sale Order

All bulls in the sale are weighed at the sale
facility prior to the sale. The order of the sale is then determined by using a chart which compares bulls of different ages directly to each other based on their weight per day of age.

This chart was developed by weighing several bulls at different ages from 12 to 40 months of age. Weight per day of age at different ages was determined and weights were calculated to give values between bulls of different growth rates.

This is necessary since the weight per day of age changes as bulls become older and bulls with different growth rates will have different rates of gain. For example, a bull that weighs 1208 lbs. at 365 days of age would have a weight per day of age of 3.3 lbs. However, this same bull would only have approximately a 1780 pound weight at 2 years of age (730 days) which would be a weight per day of age of 2.4 lbs. Another bull might weigh 730 lbs. at 365 days of age which would be a weight per day of age of 2 lbs. This bull should weigh approximately 1089 lbs. at 2 years of age (730 days) which would only be 1.5 lbs. per day of age.

Since weight per day of age changes with both age and growth rate, proper interpretations are made to form a chart which covers all ages and weights from 12 to 40 months of age and from 548 lbs. to 1205 lbs. at 12 months of age. This allows us to compare each bull to all the others by simply finding his age and weight on the chart and comparing his location on the chart with that of others. Bulls with the comparatively heavier weights for their ages are placed first at the sale. If two bulls rank the same, the older bull is placed first.

The growthier bulls are the first bulls to sell. (Some allowance should be made in buying bulls if a bull is considerably fatter than another.)
