A*L*O*T Loses a Founding Friend

Norma O'Bryan Olson
Our dear friend and founding member Norma O’Bryan Olson passed away at her home near Ennis, Texas on Friday, May 25, 2001.

Norma was preceded in death by her first husband, Pat O’Bryan. Pat and Norma spent a lifetime breeding, showing, and managing the sales of Angus cattle. She was a charter member of the A*L*O*T Angus Association, but her involvement went much further than that. For many years, Norma was the point of contact for many of us before, during, and after our A*L*O*T sales. She provided individual service to all consignors and buyers, always making a very difficult job appear easy. Her extensive knowledge and experience in the purebred Angus business was an asset that the Association will never be able to replace. We will miss Norma as a workhorse, but, most of all, we will miss her as a valued friend.

Graveside services will be held in Pawnee, Oklahoma in June. The family asks that memorials be sent to the charity of your choice in Norma’s name.

A*L*O*T 2001 Bull Sale to Include Females

The A*L*O*T Board of Directors and the A*L*O*T Officers have decided that the Fall Bull Sale will also include a select number of females. Bulls will have priority in the catalog, and remaining space in the catalog will be devoted to females. It is thought that this will keep A*L*O*T’s bull sale date and auctioneer in place as well as provide a marketing opportunity for more of our members’ females. The sale date remains November 24, 2001 and the consignment period for both bulls and females runs from Sep 1 though Oct 1, 2001. Remember that consignments must be sent through the US Mail and cannot be postmarked prior to Sep 1, 2001. Consignment forms will be mailed to all active members in August

AI Certificates - No Real Mystery-

Many of the females that are sold through A*L*O*T sales are bred to A.I sires. There has been some frustration in the past when new owners attempted to register the calf from their newly purchased cow. The Suggested Sale Terms and Conditions provided by the American Angus Association under which all A*L*O*T sales are conducted states the following regarding AI Certificates:

“AI Service Certificates shall be furnished by the seller, on demand of the buyer, at no cost to the buyer, for all females bred artificially to bulls not owned by the seller.”

Basically, this means that if you purchased a cow that was AI serviced, the seller (consignor) is obligated to furnish an AI Certificate so that the resulting calf can be registered. This is a fundamental obligation of the seller.

There is also an obligation for the buyer – notice the words “… on demand of the buyer…”. This implies that the buyer should request the certificate from the seller. All consignors are listed in the sale catalog along with address and phone number. When you contact the seller (consignor), have your American Angus Association Member Code available because he/she will need this to get a certificate transferred to you.

A few years ago, an actual paper certificate was sent to the owner of the calf to be registered and this was attached to the registration form before it was mailed in. Now, so-called “paperless certificates” are transferred electronically to an account at the association. This account is keyed to the member’s Member Code number. This is why you need to provide this number to the seller, so that the certificate can be electronically transferred to your account. Unfortunately, you will not receive confirmation from the association that they have received an electronic transfer

into your account. It takes a few days for the transfer to take effect, so don’t send you registration application in for ten days or so.

There are a few paper certificates around, and there is a very small possibility that a seller may send you one in the mail instead of using electronic transfer. If this happens, don’t worry. Just attach the certificate to your application for registration and send it off.

And, sellers, remember that the sale isn’t complete until the “paperless work” is done. When your buyer requests an AI Certificate, be courteous and business-like and make the transfer promptly. Remember, it’s YOUR customer you are taking care of.
