A*L*O*T Bull and Female Sale 2001
Great Crowd—Great Sale

The A*L*O*T Select Bull and Female Sale, “New Horizons—2001,” was held on November 24, 2001 at the Titus County Sale Facility in Mt. Pleasant, Texas.

The Sale Committee did an excellent job in advertising and promoting this sale which resulted in a large crowd who proved to be very spirited bidders. Auctioneer Scott Crawford moved 83 total lots through the ring for an overall average of $1595.

As usual, volunteer help was used so that we could keep sale costs to a minimum. Our thanks go out to all the volunteers who worked so hard to serve a great meal and to conduct yet another successful sale. A new split-load out system allowed bull buyers to begin loading as soon as the bull sale was finished and continued throughout the female portion of the sale.

This sale was our first time to use the Weight/Age Formula developed by LSU. This allowed the sale committee to place bulls in the sale order according to their current weight and age rather than age and appearance. Many bulls were cataloged with individual performance data which seemed to increase buyer interest.

A*L*O*T Spring 2002 Female Sale

A*L*O*T will hold its Spring Female Sale on May 11, 2002. The sale will again be held at the Titus County Sale Facility in Mt. Pleasant, TX. Even though the sale may seem a long way off, time has a tendency to creep up on most of us, so please start planning now to determine your consignments. Remember that well conditioned cattle sell better (well conditioned means FAT). Late winter and early spring are tough times to put weight on cows that are nursing calves, so plan to feed these girls well so that they will bring top dollar for you. Also, remember that all consignments should be accompanied by current pregnancy status, determined by a practicing vet, for the sale update sheet. The consignment form is on http://www.alotangus.org/catalogs/.

A*L*O*T's President’s Notes

It is raining as I write this letter. The fall months have given us much needed rain, and 2001 has been a year of many changes. A*L*O*T has had a very good year. We have seen an increase in membership and participation. You have already been given the high, low, and average dollar amount for the cattle at each sale, but did you know that the bulls with performance records and EPDs sold at the last sale for an average $475 more than bulls without performance records & EPDs. I want to stress to you the importance of keeping records on all of your animals.

Keeping records on your cattle does not take up much time, but you will profit each time you do write the numbers down. Keep a pen & notebook (pocket or larger) with you and a set of bathroom scales. Jot down the date of birth, weigh yourself, then pick up the calf and weigh again. There are other methods, but we need to keep up with these records. When you write the birth dates, weights, etc. jot down the information about the bull in the pasture and the date he was turned in and taken out. If you AI your cows, write down the information on the AI bull at the time of the AI beside the date of the AI. Registering cattle with the American Angus Association gives us a boost when keeping records because they keep the information we give them on file. My point is that whether you have a large or small operation, a computer record-keeping system or a pencil and notebook paper KEEP RECORDS. YOU WILL PROFIT.

If you are just beginning a herd, don’t let lack of knowledge about the Angus breed, record keeping, and EPDs stand in your way. ASK. READ. TALK to us. We, the officers and board members stand ready to help in any way that is possible for us to help you understand and succeed in marketing your ANGUS cattle.

THANK YOU A*L*O*T members and family for your help! Our sales have operated smoothly and continue to improve. The help each of you contributes (whether it is holding a gate, moving cattle, sweeping, advertising, preparing food, decorating, working the sales, bringing a buyer, smiling and welcoming, etc.) has made A*L*O*T successful and YOU ARE APPRECIATED.

As your new president, I want to continue to help you the members of A*L*O*T have an organization you are proud of; an organization that will provide a market for your ANGUS cattle. Let’s continue to improve our herds through genetics, keeping records, grooming, and feeding programs. I look forward to serving you. Happy New Year!

Our prayers are with all that suffered because of September 11, 2001. Our nation changed because of that event. The freedoms we enjoy are being tested. Farmers and Ranchers in America are feeding a majority of the world through products and knowledge. The ANGUS breed is on the top. Let’s keep it that way!
