==BEEF DEVELOPMENT & RESEARCH CENTER OF TEXAS==

In December, a letter was sent to Texas Angus breeders announcing the opening of the BEEF DEVELOPMENT & RESEARCH CENTER OF TEXAS. The Texas Angus Association and the Texas Brangus Association have partnered up” to offer members of both associations a new opportunity to develop, test, measure and market their best bulls. The Angus representatives, Robert Bruner, Paul Carpenter and Todd Davison, want every breeder to have the opportunity to be in on the cutting edge of this program.

Texas, being the home of the nations leading cow herd in numbers, is the best market in which Angus seedstock producers all over the United States are concentrating. For our members to compete within that market, we need to have places in different areas of the state to develop, test, measure and market this seedstock. Therefore, the two cattle groups have joined forces in this new venture - a place for bulls to be developed and tested by all of their producers - small, medium and large.

Under the name of BEEF DEVELOPMENT & RESEARCH CENTER OF TEXAS, ownership is at present 50% by the Texas Angus Association and 50% by the Texas Brangus Association. It is our intent to become an all-breed test, similar in nature to OBI in Oklahoma and Midland in Montana”, the letter stated.

Cattle will be fed at the Tom J. Moore Feed Yard in Navasota, TX (25 miles south of College Station). It will be a 112-day test, following a 21-day warm up on a corn/silage ration, grown mostly at the farm of 14,000 acres. Bulls will be kept in 10 acre traps.

Texas A&M will cooperate in collecting and compiling data on the bulls and keep all records and measurements. Following the test, participants will have the option to leave the bulls at the feed yard until sale date or take them home to use, sell private treaty, or place in regional sales.

This is such a timely and exciting idea that the A*L*O*T's members at the annual TAA meeting in Ft. Worth decided to help underwrite the venture with an investment of $1000. members contributing to this are s8Rick Butler, Pat O'Bryan, Learon Roberts, Jim Rudolph, Bill Stone and George Wrightstone. Anyone wishing to be involved, contact Pat at 972/846-3000.

==Message From the President==

The A*L*O*T Angus Association is flourishing - the membership is constantly increasing and the A*L*O*T cow herd is constantly improving. The members are profitably using the tools provided by the American Angus Association, AHIR data, EPD numbers, A.I. Services, and are proving their bulls in the area test stations.

Black Angus cattle continue to top sales everywhere, and I feel this is in part, because of the progress of the Certified Angus Beef Program. Mick Colvin, administrator of the CAB program, said that, We haven't seen anything yet!” He said that sometime this year, CAB would meet or exceed the production capabilities of the Big Three Packers (IBP, Monfort & Excel) and when that happens, he felt that black calf prices could again rise even higher above the market than they are now.

What does this mean to you as an Angus registered and/or commercial breeder?

Our members have outdone themselves - once again - in consigning the best from the core of their herds. We're selling 30 well-bred, breeding age bulls, fertile, strong, some proven sires, ready to go to work for you. And the female lots are Number 1 quality with lots of production at side and in utero. I'm justifiably proud of this sale offering and I know when you see the catalog and analyze the pedigrees, you too will be impressed.. The good news is that when you get to Mt. Pleasant on April 3rd and 4th, you'll find that the cattle selling physically match their quality pedigrees. So come early, enjoy the A*L*O*T hospitality and help yourself to the best in registered Angus cattle.

Be sure and call me at 903/572-1857 or 572-8413 if I can help.

Hope to see you in Mt. Pleasant on April 4th...
Learon Roberts, President A*L*O*T Angus Association.

==Editor's Notes==

A*L*O*T members are recording an Impact in many of the major shows. Express Ranches, Oklahoma, exhibited the Reserve Champion Carload of Bulls at the recent National Western on bulls sired by Leachman Right Time, Krugerrand of Donamere 490, OSU Panama 4178 and OSU Utra. They also exhibited the Champion Pen of Bulls at this prestigious show on sons of GAR Precision 1680, Rito 9FB3 of 5H11 Fullback and EXAR Fullback 5034 and is joint owner of the Reserve Champion Winter Heifer at this same show. Express captured the Grand Champion Bull honors a the October Dallas State Fair on EXR Ultra 5039, a son of OSU 6T6 Ultra. Grand Champion female honors at this show went to J.R. Kinder, Kinder Cattle Co., at Jacksboro, TX on a daughter of N Bar Emulation EXT ... the heifer was shown by the master fitter and showman, Richard Stotts. Express showed the Reserve Grand Champion Female, EXAR Miss Emulous 7507, daughter of Krugerrand of Donamere 490. At the recent Ft. Worth Stock Show, Express had Reserve Heifer Calf Champion on a stylish heifer owned jointly with Krebs.

We are getting calls from breeders seeking commercial black females - they're out there, but no one wants to sell them! At the Forth Worth Livestock Expo, the commercial female sale averaged $1,150 on 643 lots. The Champion Pen was a group of Angus crossbred heifers that sold for $1,400 per head. The Reserve Champion pen of 11 Angus heifers sold for $1,300 each ... 10 pairs of commercial Angus sold for $1,300 each.

The demand is strong for Angus based females. As registered Angus breeders our goal should be to make available quality Angus bulls for the commercial breeders. The strong PREDICTABILITY of REGISTERED, PEDIGREED bulls results in superior commercial Angus based females because the data shown in an Angus pedigree is proof of continuity of performance and heritable traits.

In the upcoming Impact '98! sale we're offering 30 Angus bulls that excel in pedigree, EPDs, strong structure and correct muscle pattern. The 55 female lots are consigned by quality-minded breeders and furnish the buyer with superior genetics and production. Each consignor guarantees his animals and the goal of the sale is to furnish profit-making cattle that will add depth and modern genetics to the herds of the buyers.

This old adage has followed me from my ol' Kentucky home, Them that has gets - them that ain't got, gets nary. This isn't gospel if Them that ain't got gets to the Impact '98! sale where the GETTIN'S GOOD!

This is March - month of St. Patrick's Day when everyone is Irish ... So Good Cess to us all - stay in touch and we'll do likewise.

Sincerely, Pat O'Bryan

==In Memory==

CARL JOSEPH SMITH October 23, 1923 - December 22, 1997

The industry lost a life-long Angus enthusiast on December 22, 1997 when Carl Smith gave up a long, fierce battle against lung cancer and pneumonia. Carl was an accomplished breeder and showman and produced quality animals in his small, select herd. He was a staunch supporter of the breed, was a past president of the East Texas Angus Association , charter member and director of the A*L*O*T Angus Association and will be sorely missed by all. He dispersed most of his herd in the October '97 sale because of his failing health. He planned to keep 3 of his favorite producing matrons and 4 quality heifers he'd raised because he just HAD to have some Angus in the pasture. These 7 females are prime features in the Impact '98! Sale.

The Impact '98 Sale Catalog has been dedicated to the Life and Memory of Carl Smith.

==Message From The TAA President==

As President of the Texas Angus Association and a member of the ALOT Angus Association it gives me great pleasure to belong to two great organizations. This year, 1998, I hope Angus cattle sell well and judging from the East Texas and Mid-Texas bull sales, it looks like the demand is strong.

My main emphasis this year is to increase our membership, increase our service to members, and to increase our support of the Texas Junior Angus Association. I have always believed that the state Association can and should help the regional associations in any way possible. The state association is there to help its members. It is growing and hopefully will be able to provide more benefits and services. In conclusion, let me say it was a great pleasure to meet the various ALOT members at the sale held last May at the Ranch. I'm looking forward to seeing all of you soon.. Sincerely, s16 - Mike Watson
